Almost 6 years to the day following the symbolic destruction and burial of the National Identity Register and ID Cards, the world’s first national federated identity scheme is ready. Designed by the Government Digital Service with the support and collaboration of privacy groups and private-sector technology companies, GOV.UK Verify is live and already being used by more than 500,000 people to access a dozen or so government services. Despite many detractors (or character builders depending on your viewpoint) along the way, this is an amazing milestone. One only has to look at how digital identity schemes have floundered around the world over the last 10 years to understand how significant this is.
A widely-accepted digital identity scheme should make our online experiences a whole lot easier. I look forward now to the day I can use my same digital identity with my local council, hospital and bank, not to mention buying tickets for Glastonbury!
